Overview
of Certificate Program
Art frees our inner healer by embracing the passionate, creative source in each one of us, no matter our work, or our perceived skill as an “artist.” Wisdom University’s Art and Healing Certificate program serves those seeking to enhance their own use of the arts to heal themselves, and/or those seeking ways to support others in healing themselves, their community or their environment.
The Art and Healing Certificate program offers students:
A broadened definition of healing;
An understanding of the biological, neurological, physiological, sociological, ecological and spiritual aspects of art and healing;
Ways for tapping into and reclaiming our own inner artist and healer;
Overview of current global cultural approaches to healing and an historical context to art as healing;
An opportunity to study with colleagues and teachers who realize the power of art to heal the body, spirit, soul and mind;
Examples of methods and settings for Art and Healing including community art, health care and other institutional settings, earth and sacred art.
A Certificate in Art and Healing can enhance one’s work in a world in which an increasing number of health professionals recognize that art, in any of its forms - visual arts, music, dance, and poetry - can have profound healing effects, including symptom control and pain management. Students may wish to explore a ‘deep ecology’ approach, which asks us to hold the deepest possible identification’ of oneself with our natural environment and transform this deep knowing into healing practices for the world around us. Others will be empowered to recognize themselves as part of the growing network of artist /healers, with the ability to share ideas, experiences, and resources.
Admissions Requirements
Certificate Students must have a Bachelors degree or its equivalency. An equivalency consists of documented training beyond a high school degree that is equivalent in hours and requirements to a Bachelors Degree.
An Application specific to the Certificate Program must be filed with the Office of Admissions, to include an essay of up to 750 words describing your interest in the program and any relevant experience you may have had, together with two references, one professional and one personal.
Certificate Requirements
Those seeking a certificate in this program are required to complete four Intensives in this area of study, plus a Practicum, as directed by their Practicum Advisor. Courses can be chosen from a range of related Wisdom University programs. For example, students might consider courses offered in the Transforming Trauma or Spiritual Direction programs. To determine whether a particular course serves to complete one's certificate requirement, students will consult with their Practicum Advisor.
Practicum
Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself... Chinese proverb
Participation in a Practicum, determined or developed by the student and approved by the Practicum Advisor is an integral part of the program.
The Practicum is designed to assist the student in setting up a project, center, client-base or initiative that demonstrates that the student both understands the fundamentals of Art and Healing and can credibly design and carry out a project or program to manifest this understanding in the world.
